First verify whether the exact Mac has built-in fans: Apple-silicon MacBook Air is fanless. On a fan-equipped Mac, an inaudible fan, a displayed zero, a missing topology, and a physically non-responsive fan are different states. Confirm the model, discovered fan count, fresh actual RPM, hardware bounds, controller, and workload. If a known fan remains unresponsive or makes mechanical noise, return to System and use Apple Diagnostics or service.
Verify that the Mac actually has a fan
Apple-silicon MacBook Air models use a fanless design. They should not show a controllable fan or produce fan RPM. MacBook Pro and desktop families can have active cooling, but the number and bounds vary by exact model identifier.
- Find Model Identifier in System Report.
- Check an exact-model compatibility source rather than the chip name.
- Confirm whether the monitoring app discovered a valid fan count and bounds.
- Never treat missing topology as proof that one fan exists at 0 RPM.

Observe a safe System-controlled response
Keep System selected and run a familiar sustained workload while watching actual RPM, thermal state, and temperature trend. Do not create an extreme workload merely to force a fan response. The goal is to see whether the known fan reports fresh, plausible change during ordinary work.
Use a bounded control test only on qualified hardware
In public Build 22, only Mac16,7 is qualified for a timed Max or Manual response test. Confirm verified control, choose a short bounded action, allow actual RPM to settle, and then select System and verify the handoff. A persistent substantial mismatch belongs in diagnostics.
Know what the Smart Breeze helper cannot do
The privileged helper performs authenticated, bounded writes on qualified hardware. It cannot add a fan, infer an unknown fan count, create missing read-only keys, repair a motor, or make an unqualified model safe. Installing or repairing it is not a monitoring workaround.
If ownership cannot be verified, keep the warning visible, re-enable or repair the helper only when Smart Breeze explicitly requests it on supported hardware, or restart and obtain fresh System readback.
When to use Apple Diagnostics or service
Use Apple Diagnostics when a fan-equipped Mac has irregular mechanical noise, a known fan repeatedly fails to respond, or the system shuts down or reports thermal symptoms. Disconnect external devices except those Apple says are needed, follow the Apple-silicon startup sequence, and keep any reference code for support.
Smart Breeze diagnostics can add model, fan readback, controller, and recent event context, but they do not replace Apple's hardware test. Nothing is sent unless you copy and share it.
