Mac fan control: System, fixed speed, and temperature curves

Fan control is not one switch. It is a decision about ownership, timing, sensor input, and the path back to macOS.

Short answer

For ordinary use, leave the fans under macOS control. A fixed target is useful for a short, supervised test; a temperature curve is better suited to repeatable sustained work because it requests progressively more airflow as a chosen sensor gets hotter. In public Build 22, Smart Breeze enables fan writes only on the exact Mac16,7 identifier and fails closed on every unknown or incomplete fan topology.

What fan control actually changes

A fan-control utility does not replace the Mac's thermal protections. It requests fan ownership or a target speed through model-specific, private hardware interfaces. The firmware still knows each fan's physical range, and macOS remains the default thermal policy when System mode is selected.

A curve is not simply an attractive graph. It maps temperature checkpoints to bounded fan targets, then interpolates between them. That makes the response conditional: quiet at the low end, progressively stronger when the workload persists.

Ownership and readback matter more than the button

A control tile changing color proves only that the interface accepted a click. A trustworthy controller also reads back the requested target and the hardware's ownership state. Smart Breeze keeps Actual, Target, and Control separate so a user can see the difference between a request and a verified result.

  • Targets are clamped to each discovered fan's firmware-reported minimum and maximum.
  • A failed write requests an all-fan rollback instead of presenting partial success.
  • System handoff is verified from fresh readback before helper removal or another control transition.
  • If topology or ownership cannot be established, the safe result is no write, not a guessed key.

How a temperature curve reacts

Smart Boost in Smart Breeze watches one selected aggregate category: CPU, GPU, Battery, or Any Sensor. It engages only when the reading crosses the curve's first point. Its requested speed never begins below the fan speed macOS was already asking for.

Hysteresis and cooldown stop the controller from rapidly handing ownership back and forth near one threshold. While Smart Boost is engaged, the target does not step downward with every small temperature dip; Smart Breeze releases to verified System control after the configured conditions are met.

Choose the least complicated mode that answers the question

  1. Start in System and reproduce the workload. Record the sensor trend, actual RPM, and macOS thermal state.
  2. Use a timed fixed target only if you need to learn whether extra airflow changes that same run.
  3. Use a curve when the workload repeats and its heat builds predictably over time.
  4. Return to System if readback, sensor input, or ownership becomes unavailable.

Manual control is a poor cure for an unexplained hot Mac. High CPU use, blocked vents, an unsuitable surface, or a hardware fault should be identified rather than hidden behind permanent fan noise.

What Smart Breeze Build 22 supports

The complete public fan-control beta, including profiles, custom curves, Smart Boost, timed Max, and Manual, is physically qualified only on Mac16,7. Other Apple-silicon Macs can show validated readings in the Build 22 sensor explorer where their keys are discovered, but public fan writes remain disabled. Fanless Macs never receive fan controls.
