Short answer
Sustained warmth and fan activity can be expected during a demanding video export, but there is no universal export temperature that diagnoses every Mac. Fix the project, cache state, export preset, ambient conditions, power mode, and starting state; run System mode first; and compare trends and repeated completion results. A fan curve can be evaluated on Mac16,7 as a separate cooling condition, but lower temperature alone does not prove a faster or safer export.
Define the export before interpreting its heat
The label “video export” can describe very different work: decoding camera originals, rendering effects, denoising, color transforms, optical flow, compositing, encoding, or writing to storage. One timeline can shift between CPU, GPU, media engines, memory, and disk. The hottest Smart Breeze sensor category may therefore change during a single run.
Apple’s Power Modes can also change system behavior on supported Mac models. Record the selected mode instead of assuming two adapter-powered runs are equivalent. Keep the Mac on a stable surface, leave vents unobstructed, and note the ambient temperature within Apple’s published operating range.
Freeze a representative project
Create a small test project that is long enough to reach sustained conditions and legal to retain. Preserve it with the media and write down every setting needed to reproduce the output.

Use a System-mode baseline protocol
- Restart only if that is part of every run. Otherwise close unrelated apps and wait for background CPU activity to settle in Activity Monitor.
- Set the same Power Mode, connect the same displays and storage, place the Mac in the marked position, and record room temperature.
- Choose Smart Breeze System mode so macOS owns the fans. Record the starting selected sensor, temperature, thermal pressure, fan RPM, and battery level.
- Apply the declared cache condition, start the fixed export, and do not scrub the timeline, browse, or run other work during it.
- Record export duration, the temperature and RPM trace, thermal-pressure changes, application errors, and whether the output passed a basic quality check.
- Let the Mac return to the same starting band, then repeat. Two materially different System runs mean the baseline needs investigation before a cooling comparison.

A change can lower a selected temperature while making the Mac louder and leaving export duration unchanged. Another run can finish faster because a cache was warm, not because the fans ran earlier. Report each outcome separately and include the variation between repeats.
- Thermal: starting value, sustained plateau or trend, brief peaks, thermal-pressure state, and recovery after export.
- Cooling: actual and target fan RPM, time to ramp, oscillation, and whether System handoff was verified.
- Workload: completion time, error state, output validity, and editor-reported engine or frame information where available.
- Experience: fan-noise observation made from a fixed position. If using a sound meter, document the device, distance, room floor, and weighting.
Choose a curve source from the trace
On the qualified Mac16,7, Smart Breeze can watch CPU, GPU, or Any Sensor and request earlier airflow through Smart Boost. Choose the source that tracks the repeatable heat rise in your fixed project. Do not assume GPU because the application draws a complex preview or CPU because it is encoding; the actual balance depends on the media, effects, codec, and software path.
- Run the project in System mode and identify which available category rises consistently before the sustained plateau.
- Start with a built-in curve and the same adapter or battery condition. Smart Breeze stores those curves independently.
- If customizing, place the first point from observed behavior and change one point. Do not change the sensor, all points, Power Mode, and cooling stand together.
- Keep hysteresis and cooldown long enough to avoid reacting to every short edit or scene transition, then check for repeated ramping and release.
- Repeat the fixed export and a second System run in an alternating order when practical, so room drift and cache effects are easier to see.
Change workload settings before blaming cooling
If the goal is a reliable deadline rather than a cooling experiment, the editor may offer more direct levers: a different export preset, optimized or proxy media, a supported hardware-encoding path, pre-rendered effects, or a lower-cost denoise or optical-flow setting. Verify the output requirement before changing quality.
Also inspect Activity Monitor for an unrelated process consuming CPU, confirm free storage and destination health, update the editor and plug-ins deliberately, and test problematic third-party effects in isolation. A fan curve cannot repair corrupt media, an export bug, insufficient storage, or a failing external drive.
Escalate persistent hardware symptoms
Return Smart Breeze to System and save diagnostics if fan control cannot verify its target or handoff, readings become unavailable, or the helper reports a failure. For repeated shutdowns, new grinding or rattling, a fan that does not respond under macOS control, or thermal warnings outside the test project, use Apple Diagnostics and seek Apple or qualified service guidance.
Do not keep rerunning a long export after signs of battery swelling, liquid damage, electrical odor, or abnormal enclosure deformation. Disconnect power when safe and arrange service.
